Total Living Naturals

Harmony With Nature for better health and a better world

I've decided to take on the city of chattanooga "chicken ordinance." I'd really like to get it changed and I think there's a good chance to do it within the next counsel meeting in Dec. I need to get as many signatures as possible.

chicken coop

I called the city on this and found out the following. Unless you are grandfathered in before 2005, you cannot have chickens on less than 5 acres within the city limits of chattanooga.

I spoke to the director of operations of animal welfare and she even suggested we challenge this! Many people are interested in having organic free range eggs
but cannot afford the price of these healthy eggs.

She said the dog ordinance to keep dogs out of the river park was changed by getting 2,000 signatures recently. She said the chicken ordinance may not require that many signatures, but we would need to write up the proposed change in details.

The city counsel meets again in December so please sign the proposal to help us get it passed. I also have the specific e-mail address  for the director of operations. She said she is the one that would take it to the city counsel.

I would like to mention also that I know a good organic source to get chickens and chicken feed that is all natural. It's the same people who supply sequatchie valley organic farm with their chickens and feed.

I think this is an important issue for those of us that would like to become more sustainable within the city!

If you want to sign to make this new chicken ordinance pass please send me a message with subject: I'm signing for the new chicken ordinance
Send your e-mail to blazyk@bellsouth.net

Feel free to post comments on this post if you have any other suggestions for this proposal. Thank You Sooooo Much!!!

  1. Aaron Gustafson Said,

Where did this end up? I live on about a quarter acre in the city and am interested in chickens/ducks/quail for eggs and dwarf goats for milk.

  2. Lynn Said,

The ordinance has not been changed yet, but you can go to the facebook page sustainable chattanooga, to keep up with what's happening.
