Harmony With Nature for better health and a better world

I've always loved growing things. My Mother instilled a love of gardening in me when I was growing up. I can still remember going out in the backyard garden, walking through skyscraper corn stalks (at least it seem the stalks were that high to me then), and picking each ear that Mom said was ready to be picked. We would have corn on the cob for supper that night and I was the one that always ate most of them. I would always polish off at least 3 or 4 ears, hey at least I helped pick them. My brothers never were much good in the garden. Sorry bros, but I guess you had other interest.

As I left out on my own, everywhere I lived, I always had some sort of garden. Even in an apartment, I gathered big boxes of dirt and grew a little of everything out on the balcony. Come to think about it, it's a wonder that balcony held up all that weight. Well, I guess we were lucky, because I was too young and dumb to even think about that back then.

Over the years I intuitively knew chemical fertilizers and pesticides were not the way I wanted to garden. Nature had gotten by for millions of years without them and I certainly was not going to argue with the balance of nature. So, I began to do what nature would do, compost and plant for diversity that in turn brought everything into more balance. The diverse plants would attract all the diverse insects and kept a natural balance. Planting green cover crops in spring and fall provided even more material to break down and nourish the soil.

I will always love to garden, it's in my blood I guess and as the soil nouishes the plants, the garden nourishes my soul. I think it's that connectedness feeling I have when I'm out there. I become part of it all, the earth, the sky, mother nature, life, all merge into oneness.
